The Hunter’s Ode

I tried to trap you
like a hunter
traps a black bear

You outsmarted me
so we began a courting
based on outsmarting

I’ll take no woman friend
I’ll go to no town
La la la la la la la
And you’ll hide in no damn cave
all through the winter
La la la la la la la

It’s very tiring
alone in the forest land
hunting, hunting

I saw you in a clearing
I could have caught you
You could have hurt me

I’ll take no woman friend
I’ll go to no town
La la la la la la la
And you’ll hide in no damn cave
all through the winter
La la la la la la la

That bright morning
we forgot our calling
and we rested in the grass

We’re a team of fairy tales
living in the fair hills
with the sky the woods and the river

I’ll take no woman friend
I’ll go to no town
La la la la la la la
And you’ll hide in no damn cave
all through the winter
La la la la la la la

Don’t you take no woman in
she wouldn’t understand us
La la la la la la
I will hide in no damn cave
run from no clearing
La la la la la la la la la.

Where I Begin

I don’t know where you end and
where I begin
I get hurt from little things
Maybe everyone does
but they keep it in

I don’t know where you end and
where I begin
The town at the edge of the sea
will not realise
until the water seeps in

I don’t know where you end and
where I begin
I notice everything
that you feel and do
You worry I don’t love you

I don’t know where you end and
where I begin
I watch this moonlit spot
at the edge of the land
to keep the tide in hand

The part of me that touches you
is hurt and confused
Doesn’t know where it ends
and where I begin
and where you begin
and where we begin

The Golden Afternoon

I turn to the window, it’s that time
when the sun looks not down
but across at you

Like a sister far away
I’d like to bring her across the land
to seal up the place
where that hollow sound starts
so I never feel afraid again

The golden afternoon
the golden afternoon

She’s leaving soon
The shimmer scrapes across the sea
but it don’t reach down
only the night touches that place
and freezes it with one touch
I can’t be alone then

The golden afternoon
the golden afternoon

Can you feel that?
Can you feel that shining static
as the day brushes night?
One day I’ll be warm
and deep down I’ll be light
and as the night seeps around me
I’ll illuminate it
and see her there

The golden afternoon
the golden afternoon

Death is at my left
Back lit by the sun (of the golden afternoon)
He looks so soft in that late light
I can’t run

In Future Lives

In future lives
I’ll dream of you
forget upon waking
I’ll have to lay there longer
Eyes closed
the day half over
soft and familiar

One day I’ll feel a presence in the room
In the corner of my eye someone’s staring
I know you’re there
Yes I had a lover once
but he had your old smile

To catch a glimpse
I’ll miss every sunrise
To his surprise
When that nice man asks me out to town
I’ll smile and say ‘I’m not one for the night life’

And here I am today
You’re the love of my life
and I’m draining you away
I’m just so scared that when we die
I’ll turn around
and I’ve lost you in the crowd

In future lives I’ll dream of you
In future lives I’ll sleep much more than I do
today

Sweet Jesus

Sweet Jesus
you love the sunshine shining on the masses
The tired truth I seek
it’s absence tires me
but I no longer wish to be asleep

Sweet Jesus
are you listening?
Answer me
I’ve tasted the sun like bitter honey and light in my mouth
For this I thank thee
May I find the sun that is me?
Amen
